#242 [TALK-25] Swap-as-a-Service: A bad, yet functional solution to an edge case developer problem
Closed: Talk Not Scheduled by q5sys. Opened by q5sys.

This year our contributor conference will be virtual! You have the option to submit live or pre-recorded sessions.

What is your proposal?

  • Discuss a specific problem with the modern consumer/enterprise differentiation to hardware offerings, and my admittedly bad but functional solution to a problem I have run into as a developer with little money to spend on a build server.
  • What I want: High clock speed low core count CPUs + Oodles of RAM
  • Reality:
  • Consumer = High clock speed low core count CPUs + Limited RAM
  • Enterprise = Low clock speed and high core count CPUs + Oodles of RAM

  • While my solution isn't very elegant, its a perfect example of the benefits of the UNIX philosophy; making tools that do one job well and being able to come up with odd solutions by bolting different things together that no one intended to be put together.

  • There certainly is a more elegant solution for what I'm trying to accomplish, and I hope that this will garner attention from the people who are far smarter than I about RDMA so that this could potentially be turned into a real workable solution.

Who in addition to the speaker needs to be in the virtual room for this to succeed? This could be the audience you need to reach, other participants in the conversation, or other stakeholders.

  • I don't think anyone needs to be around. However someone who actually knows about RDMA would be someone I'd want to talk to after the talk so that I could do this properly.

Is this a…

  • I'm thinking this would be a 25 minute Talk however if it was really needed to help fill the schedule, I could probably turn it into a 50 minute talk.

Anything else we need to know?

  • Nothing I can think of.

Sadly a family matter has come up which will mean I will not be available the weekend of Nest. 😞
But there's always 2021 right?
