I needed to set use_nspawn = False (I'm running inside a container already, and nspawn has issues with that), but AFAICS there's no way to influence the mock config, it's hardcoded.

Agreed.

@walters do you have a workaround for now? Help me understand how urgent this is.

I just hacked the code locally, so I'm not blocked.
