Sorry for the delay in the review, Vanessa. I was trying to get all the tests to run---done that in this PR now.

Hrm, some more tinkering is required to make it build correctly on all arches that NEURON supports. So, this is still a WIP I'm afraid. Still working on the remaining bits.

OK, ready now. Here's a scratch build showing that the build passes on all architectures. I've also filed issues with the developers and made comments in the spec about them:
