#11777 Enable linker errors for security issues
Closed: It's all good by phsmoura. Opened by nickc.

  • Describe the issue

Currently the ld.bfd linker defaults to generating warning messages when it creates binaries with potential security vulnerabilities. This issue is to enhance the linker so that it generates error messages by default instead. If warning messages or no messages are desired a linker command line option will have to be deliberately used.

  • When do you need this? (YYYY/MM/DD)

Ideally in time for the Fedora 40 branch, ie: 2024-02-06

  • When is this no longer needed or useful? (YYYY/MM/DD)

Never - it will always be useful.

  • If we cannot complete your request, what is the impact?

The potential for a less secure Fedora. Without the linker errors it is possible that new or existing packages will be built with potential security vulnerabilities that could otherwise have been fixed.

Thanks, we talked about this in fedora daily and we see no releng impact
