What is the advantage of quay.io though?

It's public-facing, so we may be able to set our Fedora infra image streams to pull from it in os.fp.o.
I have hopes that it will be open-sourced someday by Red Hat. I have no specific reason to think that it in particular will be open-sourced, only that Red Hat has a track record of doing this with other technologies (i.e., Tower/AWX).
